π Call to Book: (305) 300-0417What Is Deep Drop Fishing?
Deep drop fishing is the most technically demanding discipline in sportfishing. While most offshore charters work the surface and mid-column for pelagic species, deep dropping puts your bait on the bottom of the ocean floor β 600, 800, even 1,200 feet down β in pursuit of species that most anglers have never heard of, let alone caught.
The Florida Keys sit on the edge of the continental shelf, where the ocean floor drops rapidly from reef depths of 30β60 feet to abyssal depths exceeding 2,000 feet within a few miles. This geological feature creates a unique deep-water habitat where cold-water bottom species thrive in the permanent darkness below the thermocline. It's a different world down there, and the fish are extraordinary.
Deep dropping requires specialized equipment that most charter boats simply don't carry. Electric reels capable of retrieving 10+ pound weights from extreme depth. Braided line calibrated for minimal stretch at 1,000 feet. LED drop lights that attract bait and target species in total darkness. Heavy-duty rod and reel combos built to withstand the sustained pressure of deep-water fishing. On Just Cuz, we run this gear as standard equipment β not as an afterthought.
Target Species
The deep-water prize fish of the Florida Keys
Queen Snapper
The crown jewel of deep drop fishing. Queen snapper inhabit depths of 400β1,200 feet along steep drop-offs and ledges. Their electric-red color and delicate, sweet flesh make them one of the most sought-after food fish in the Atlantic. A single queen snapper fillet is worth the entire trip. We target them along the deep ledges south of Islamorada where the shelf drops into the Florida Straits.
Golden Tilefish
Found in muddy bottom habitat at 600β1,000 feet, golden tilefish build burrow systems in the ocean floor and defend their territory aggressively. They hit hard for a bottom fish and their meat rivals lobster in sweetness and texture. Deep drop trips in the right habitat produce consistent tilefish action β we know the mud patches where they congregate.
Barrel Fish
Also called the black driftfish, barrel fish are found at 600β800 feet along hard bottom and structure. They're relatively unknown outside the commercial fishing world, but their firm, white meat and aggressive feeding behavior make them a deep drop favorite. When you find the right piece of bottom, barrel fish stack up in numbers.
Snowy Grouper
The deep-water cousin of the more common shallow reef groupers, snowies inhabit rocky bottom from 500β1,000 feet. They grow large β fish over 30 pounds are not uncommon β and their meat is dense, flaky, and excellent on the table. Snowy grouper season is limited by federal regulations, but when they're open, they're a premier target on our deep drop trips.
Why Just Cuz for Deep Drop Fishing
Deep drop fishing demands a hull that can hold position in current over precise GPS coordinates while anglers work baits at extreme depth. The Just Cuz β a custom 43-foot Merritt β was designed for exactly this kind of offshore work. Her Carolina flare sheds spray in heavy Gulf Stream seas, and her beam provides the stable platform needed to manage multiple deep-drop rigs simultaneously.
Captain Conan Yates has logged thousands of hours fishing the deep edges off the Florida Keys. He knows the specific ledges, rock piles, and mud patches where each target species concentrates. This isn't guesswork β it's GPS-catalogued knowledge built over years of dedicated deep-water exploration. Every piece of productive bottom is marked, annotated, and revisited season after season.
Our deep drop setup includes Hooker Electric reels, 130lb class Shimano Tiagra rods, braided mainline with fluorocarbon leaders, custom multi-hook chicken rigs, and LED attracting lights. We carry dedicated deep drop tackle β this gear stays on the boat specifically for these trips. You won't find us improvising with repurposed trolling equipment.

When to Book a Deep Drop Charter
Year-Round Fishery: Unlike seasonal pelagic species, deep drop targets are available twelve months a year. Queen snapper, tilefish, and barrel fish don't migrate β they live in the deep water permanently. The only variable is weather and sea conditions, which determine whether we can safely and effectively reach the deep spots.
Best Conditions (MarchβOctober): Calmer seas during the warmer months make deep drop fishing most productive. Lighter winds mean less drift, which translates to better bait presentation at extreme depth. Summer is prime time for dedicated deep drop trips.
Winter Deep Drops (NovemberβFebruary): Still very fishable on calm weather windows. These trips often combine well with swordfishing, since both disciplines target the deep-water column in the same general area. Captain Conan watches the forecast closely and schedules deep drop trips on the best weather windows.
Snowy Grouper Season: Federal regulations control the snowy grouper season β check current dates when booking. When snowies are open, they become a primary target alongside queens and tilefish.
